Coconut oil has been a staple product for natural hair care regimens as well as skin care regimens for years.Other benefits of using coconut oil include: cooking and oil pulling, you are bound to find a great use this oil. Here’s how I use coconut oil for both my skin and hair.
Pre-poo
Pre-poo is short for pre-shampoo hences the term “pre-poo”, it is used before shampooing to make detangling a breeze. When used for pre-pooing Coconut Oil works as a protectant before using harsh and drying shampoos. Also, it makes your hair softer and helps to restore lost moisture. Just apply coconut oil and a plastic cap and reap the benefits.
Sealant
Coconut oil is a great sealant for my natural hair. This oil is light weight, which leaves your hair feeling non-greasy. The best thing about using this oil to seal is that it penetrates your hair shaft immediately. The reminding oil stays on top of the hair cuticle acting as a sealant while not drying the hair out.
Scalp Moisturizer
Back in the day many if not all african-americans used hair grease as a scalp moisturizer, but since then we have learned that hair grease clogs the pores of the scalp. Try using coconut oil as a substitute for grease to moisturize your scalp if you experience dry scalp or dandruff.
Make up remover
Coconut oil is a great alternative to use besides water when removing eye make-up including mascara and eyeshadow. Follow up with a make-up remover wipe this will make it 100x easier to remove those stubborn waterproof makeup.
Chapstick
Chapped lips can last all year around, so why not find a DIY chapstick that you can use. Coconut oil can be used as a great chapstick to apply to your chapped, dry, and pealing lips! Try applying just a small amount to the tips of your finger as much as needed. Take it a step further by grabbing the coconut oil mixing it with brown sugar, and adding a few drops of honey. You can even add a few essential oils such as lavender or rosemary to get it a nice smell. There you have it, a DIY lip scrub!
Shaving cream
Apply as much coconut oil on your legs, arms, underarms or wherever you want to remove hair after you have showered. Your hair follicles will be opened due to the warm water, which can result in a closer shave. If you really want soft skin try applying the lip/body scrub you made prior to shaving. It works wonders!
Have fun with this! Let me know if you have tried coconut oil for your hair or skin.
