Detangling Natural Hair

FingerDetangling

Detangling can be one of the most time consuming activities while trying to maintain healthy hair. Lets face it! It’s inevitable for curly hair not to get knots and tangles.  The struggle. With all that this process takes, which method seems to work best: Finger detangling or using hair tools.

Finger detangling

Finger detangling is simply using your ten fingers as tools to “comb” through your hair. By using your fingers it is easier to feel all the tangles and knots that your hair has. You can decide how much force you want to put on your hair by the use of widening or narrowing your fingers.

Note: This process has decreased my breakage about at least 75%.

Denman Brush

The Denman brush is one of the most widely used hair tools for naturals today. It comes in the D3, D31, D41, and many other series depending on the widing of the bristles. It is made of an anti-rubber static pad and plastic bristles, which essentially glide through your hair with little manipulation. Sometimes its best to modify your Denman brushy taking out some of the rows of “teeth.” This will create less breakage.

Wide tooth comb

The wide tooth comb has been used for generations unlike the denman brush, which is fairly new. Naturals love the wide tooth comb because of the seperation of the “teeth.” This comb can detangle efficiently without causing too much breakage and removes shed hair with little effort. My favorite wide tooth combs include Tool Structure Shower detangling Comb and Tool Structure Jumbo Rake Combo. Both are available on Amazon and at Sallys Beauty Supply.

Note:

Detangling on wet hair is probably best no matter which method is used. This will ensure less damage or breakage. If you are wanting to detangle on dry hair and try the finger-detangling.

Have you used any of the detangling methods above? Will you try? Let me know!
